CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR 2006
NEWS: Santa Specials (we’re putting on extra trains!) Boxing Day to New Year’s Day: Trains every day – plus Guided Walks on 31/12 & 01/01
Wensleydale Railway is adding extra trains to its published programme of Santa Specials and New Year Guided Walks, due to heavy demand for these popular services over the holiday period.
“There is still just time for families to book their train journey with Santa,” says WR’s chairman, Mrs. Ruth Annison. “Santa Specials are running every day from now until Christmas Eve. Families should book their tickets in advance so that Santa’s helpers can put the right presents on board each train for the ages of the children. And also so that there is enough mulled wine and mince pies for all the grownups!” To book, phone 08454 50 54 74 or call at Leeming Bar station.
The Wensleydale Railway is only closed for Christmas Day and then trains will run every day from Boxing Day through to New Year’s Day, with some special events. Mince pies and mulled wine will be available for passengers on December 26, 27, 30 and 31 and New Year’s Day.
Guided Walks from the Train:
On New Year’s Day, a 5-6 mile Guided Walk from Leyburn to Redmire will start from Leyburn station at 11.50 (train departs Leeming Bar at 10.35, Bedale 10.41, Finghall 10.59, Redmire 11.35).
Due to substantial interest in this event, there will also be a 5-6 mile circular Guided Walk the previous day, New Year’s Eve, which will start from Redmire station at 11.30; train times as above and also from Leyburn at 11.14. For the timetable, see www.wensleydalerailway.com or phone Leyburn TIC (01969 623069).
Return journeys are based on the train leaving Redmire at 3.35pm (15.35). Walkers should wear suitable clothing and footwear for changeable weather and bring refreshments, especially drinks. There is no charge to join WR’s Guided Walks for those with valid same-day WR rail tickets; others are welcome (£2 charge).
Sir Leon Brittan, a keen and knowledgeable walker, describes Wensleydale as “wonderful walking country.” He has also pointed out that most walks can be done eight times without repetition - by doing them in each of the four seasons and then in the other direction.
“We are running trains daily from Boxing Day to New Year’s Day to give as many people as possible a chance to get out into the countryside for at least one day in the holiday period,” says Mrs. Annison. “There are plenty of opportunities to stroll from stations, ramble in the dale – or use the train for a car-free short break in the dale.”
