Wensleydale Railway joins national Community Rail event.
Residents of six local postcode areas will be able to buy cheaper rail tickets this weekend (18-20 May).
A North Yorkshire railway is offering special fares this weekend to local residents, as its contribution to the national programme of Community Rail events.
This is the third year that there has been a co-ordinated campaign to draw attention to the train services offered by branch and local lines. Residents of six local postcode areas will be able to use a utility bill showing their address – together with evidence of identity – to claim “2 for the price of 1” or “4 for the price of 2” travel on the Wensleydale Railway (child rate for adults travelling on WR alone). The offer applies this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 18-20 May.
“We use the opportunity provided by the Community Rail programme to promote our train services,” says Mrs Ruth Annison, chairman. “This year we have chosen to apply the special discount to people who live near the line; another year it was for people on holiday who were staying on nearby caravan sites. “We hope this year’s offer will enable many local people who have not already done so to ride on the Wensleydale Railway over the weekend. Everything is looking so very green and lovely as summer approaches.” The relevant postcode areas for residents to claim these special fares are: DL6, DL7, DL8, DL9, DL10 and DL11.
By chance, this is also the weekend when David Joy, former editor of The Dalesman, is leading a Guided Walk on Saturday, based on the Wensleydale Railway, as part of the Millennium Trust’s Celebrating Woodland weekend.
The Guided Walk will depart from Redmire station at 11.30 am for St. Joseph’s Wood, near Aysgarth where there will be some organised environmental activities in the woods. Intending walkers should catch the 10.35 train from Leeming Bar (Bedale 10.41, Finghall 10.59 and Leyburn 11.14) and bring food and drinks, warm clothing and strong footwear. The walk is free with a valid same-day WR train ticket.
For those who travel by car, there is free car parking at Redmire station but there is a £2 charge per person for the Guided Walk, which is approximately four miles each way. The return train departs Redmire at 17.35 (5.35 pm). Details are given on the website www.wensleydalerailway.com or phone 08454 50 54 74. “This is the first time that we have collaborated with the Millennium Trust to put on an event, “ says Mrs. Annison. “We are looking forward to working with a number of other local organisations during the year, to boost the idea of sustainable transport to summer and autumn events in Hawes, Hardraw and Ribblehead and this is the pilot scheme.
