NEW BEDALE ATTRACTION FOR ‘DAY OUT WITH THOMAS’
When Thomas the Tank Engine visits the Wensleydale Railway on June 9 and 10, children’s entertainment and competitions will be housed in the new exhibition hall at Bedale station for the first time. On Saturday and Sunday June 9 and 10, Thomas will be puffing up and down, mainly between Leeming Bar, Morton-on-Swale river bridge and Bedale station. Fans can see him, admire him, photograph Thomas or buy special tickets for a ride behind the famous little blue engine. There will also be lots of fun things to do at Bedale, including balloon modelling and a colouring competition, refreshments and stalls with Thomas toys and games. “We are very grateful to Hambleton District Council for making the new hall at Bedale available for the week-end,” says Mrs. Ruth Annison, the railway’s chairman. “It is a superb building, next door to the station, in the new Craft Yard (the former Kerfoot premises). Day Out With Thomas passengers will arrive there by train from Leeming Bar and enjoy a break in the exhibition hall before continuing their journeys.” Two vintage buses will provide FREE ‘park and ride’ journeys to Leeming Bar station throughout the week-end. The P+ R will operate from the large free car park near McDonalds, beside the A1 Northbound access road at Leeming Bar. Alternatively, anyone travelling by train from Redmire, Leyburn and Finghall can claim free travel on the regular train service to Leeming Bar when booking DOWT tickets in advance. Sir Topham Hatt, the Fat Controller, is expected to be present throughout the week-end to issue Certificates of Travel to young passengers on their Day Out With Thomas. To avoid queues, families are advised to pre-book timed rides on Thomas by printing out the advance booking form on the website www.wensleydalerailway.com or by phoning 08454 50 54 74 (answerphone). Refreshments will be provided for Thomas from a tank wagon which belongs to the Wensleydale Railway. It will provide Thomas with his own special drinking water. In 1945, Rev. W. Awdry wrote down the bedtime story he had told his small son Christopher and published it as a book. Since then, generations of parents and children have enjoyed reading the stories about Thomas together. The little blue tank engine and his friends have become world famous and Christopher has become a railway author himself. He has even written two books about the Wensleydale Railway, The Chips Express and Heave-Ho Hamish. Both books are available in the restored shop coach at Leeming Bar station and at Leyburn station.
